During a street protest at 9:03 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, a 37 year-old male protester was shot multiple times by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent at the intersection of 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis.The male was given medical aid at the scene and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported at 11:31 a.m. stated that federal agents conducted an operation in the area, when the man approached Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. A photograph of the handgun was provided by DHS. An agent fired defensive shots after attempting to disarm the suspect, according to DHS.
A video captured from across the street at the Glam Doll Donuts, 2605 Nicollet Avenue, Minneapolis, MN showed a struggle involving at least seven federal agents with additional backup arriving with the male on his knees on the sidewalk. A single gunshot is heard, followed by about 10 additional gunshots. A female was also capturing video on the same side of the street as the shooting.
There are multiple additional videos from other directions. Initially, CARDINAL NEWS is not referring to those videos until additional confirmation and investigation occurs. A video by the female in the pink coat shows the 37 year-old male in the middle of Nicollet Avenue, and he appears be directing traffic. Multiple whistles are blowing — apparently the whistles used to warn illegal immigrants of ICE activity in a neighborhood. A woman is shoved to the curb, and the male appears to come to her rescue but also physically interacts with ICE. The male is brought to the ground, and a struggle continues involving several ICE agents. A shot is fired, and next several other shots are fired rapidly, but it is not easy to determine the source of the shots.
