Lake County Sheriff’s officials announced Saturday, July 15, 2023 that all suspects have been arrested in circumstances involving the shooting of three victims that resulted in the death of one of the shooting victims on July 26, 2022 outside a minimart in Beach Park.

On June 15, 2023, Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives obtained an arrest warrant on the final person involved in a shooting on July 26, 2022 that resulted in the death of Christopher Williams, 22, of North Chicago. The final suspect, Shelton L. Sherrod, 22, of the 3300 block of Colgate Avenue, Zion was arrested on Friday, July 14, 2023 with a warrant for two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon (class 2 felonies), for being in possession of a firearm during the time of the shooting.

During the course of this investigation, members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group, which includes the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Chicago Field Division, acquired machine gun conversion devices (auto-sears) that Sherrod was selling. This resulted in the issuance of a search warrant for Sherrod’s residence.

Friday, July 14, 2023, sheriff’s detectives and members of SIG conducted the search warrant at Sherrod’s residence. Sheriff’s detectives and members of SIG arrested Sherrod and recovered 12 additional auto-sears, a semi-automatic pistol that was converted into a machine gun with an auto-sear and numerous rounds of ammunition.

After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges for Sherrod:

Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (class X felony)

28 counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (class 2 felonies)

Unlawful Possession of Firearm by a Felon (class 2 felony)

Sherrod remains held in the Lake County Jail on $5,000,000.00 bail.

On August 19, 2022, Lake County Sheriff’s Detective obtained an arrest warrant for Cameron Anthony McCullough, 20, of the 2300 block of Joanna Avenue, Zion for one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (class 4 felony). McCullough was in possession of a firearm during the time of the shooting. McCulloh was in custody of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections on an unrelated charge, but was to be extradited to Lake County following his Wisconsin prison sentence

Beginning with the response to the shooting incident on July 26, 2022, Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives conducted an extensive investigation into this shooting, which resulted in the death of Christopher Williams.

Based on the evidence obtained during the investigation, sheriff’s detectives learned shots were fired from people who were inside two vehicles.

While the investigation remained active and ongoing, two people were initially arrested and charged for their role in the shooting.

Jaziya K. Bankston, 22, of the 2100 block of Greenwood Avenue, Waukegan, and Dishelle Y. Flores, 21, of the 2400 block of Kennedy Drive, North Chicago, were both arrested on August 25, 2022.

Bankston and Flores were two of the people shot during the initial incident.

After reviewing the facts and circumstances, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Delivery of Cannabis against both Flores and Bankston.

Sheriff’s detectives continued to investigate, and announced in August 2022 that additional arrests and charges were likely.

Flores remained held in the Lake County Jail on $200,000.00 bail and was due back in court on September 1, 2022. Bankston remained held in the Lake County Jail on $500,000.00 bail and was due back in court on September 2, 2022.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office initially described this a account of the shooting incident in July 2022 …

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2022 to a business parking lot in the 38900 block of North Lewis Avenue, Beach Park, for a report of a shooting, where at least one person was shot. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived quickly, however, no victims were at the scene. An additional responding deputy located a vehicle pulled to the side of the road in the area of Wadsworth Road and Gabriel Avenue, Beach Park. Inside the vehicle, the Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy discovered three people with gunshot wounds.




Preliminary investigation had shown that the three victims met the shooting suspect in the parking lot of the above business. They spoke for a period of time and an argument erupted. Before the offender fled in a separate vehicle, he fired numerous shots at the victims, striking them, as they were in their vehicle. The victims then fled from the scene in their vehicle just before deputies arrived.

Two of the shooting victims were adult men, one was in critical condition and one was in serious condition. One of the victims is an adult woman, she remains in stable condition. All three were transported to area hospitals via ambulances.

Based on the investigative facts initially, the incident did not appear to be a gang-related shooting.
