Police, firefighters and paramedics from Palatine responded about 1:22 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2022 to a report of a rollover crash with injuries at 150 South Northwest Highway in Palatine. At least one police officer witnessed the crash or was on scene immediately after the crash. Two people in the car were injured. The restaurant was closed, and no people were in the restaurant at the time of the crash.
The driver of a red sedan was traveling with one passenger westbound on Northwest Highway west of Hicks Road and east and south of Parallel Street in Palatine when he apparently lost control and was unable to make the northbound turn on Northwest Highway.
The red sedan hit a wood sign with a 4’x4″ inch post, a light pole, and a pine tree with an almost 2-foot diameter tree trunk. The light pole snapped at the base, and the pine tree trunk was snapped completely through. The car continued toward the “Original” JJ Twigs Pizza & Pub and hit the side of the building. The vehicle came to rest on the driver’s side with both occupants trapped in the car.
Firefighter/paramedics needed to saw and remove the pine tree, which was on top of the car. Both men were injured, and were extricate within about 20 minutes. Firefighters used Hurst cutter/spreader tools and a Sawzall reciprocating saw to create openings to extricate the two crash victims. Both victims were transported to area hospital(s), which were not disclosed.
Police initially only cited a 37 year-old male driver from Chicago with Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Collision. Palatine police stated that the investigation is ongoing, and that additional charges could be filed after the investigation is completed.
