A Russian helicopter air attack at Gostomel Airport near Kyiv, Ukrainian-made Antonov An-225 “Dream” aircraft — the largest in the world — destroyed February 24, 2022.

The cargo jet is considered the flagship of Ukrainian aviation – the legendary An-225″ Dream “, according to Ukrainian Pravda/Ukrainian Truth/touch ENG link upper right).

The restoration or replacement will cost more than $ 3 billion and will take a long time. Ukraine will make every effort to ensure that the aggressor state pays for these works.”

General Director of Ukroboronprom Yuri Gusev said that it is estimated that it will take more than $ 3 billion and more than 5 years, but our task is to ensure that these costs are covered by Russia (reported on the Ukrainian Pravda/Ukrainian Truth YouTube channel video).

According to Ukrainian Pravda/Ukrainian Truth, Bucha Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk said, “After the fifth air attack on the airport, the ‘Dream’ was completely bombed.”

Initially the Antonov An-225 was a strategic airlift cargo aircraft that was designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union during the 1980s.

The Antonov An-225 was designed to airlift the Energia rocket’s boosters and the Buran-class orbiters for the Soviet space program, similar to the the United States Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

The aircraft was placed in storage in the 1990s.

The first commercial flight of the An-225 departed from Stuttgart, Germany January 3 2002, and flew to Thumrait, Oman, with 216,000 prepared meals for American military personnel based in the region. The ready meals were transported on 375 pallets weighing 187.5 tons.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in early-2020, the Antonov An-225 was used in the relief effort and was assigned to deliver medical supplies from China to other parts of the world.

Andriy Vasylenko describes the hurt to hear the news that Russians destroyed the only Antonov 225 Mriya — the biggest plane in history. It was a perfect mix of beauty and power. Built for Soviet space program, it was repurposed as a special cargo transport. It’s more efficient to make and use several smaller cargo aircraft, so there might not be another such piece again.
