The final US troops left Afghanistan late Monday to end a two-decade war that initially was a response to fight against terrorists or situations believed to be responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks on September 1, 2001.

Estimates of tens of millions or billions of dollars in military equipment have been reported to have been left behind with the evacuation of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. Marine Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, head of U.S. Central Command, reported earlier this week that some of the equipment had been “demilitarized,” essentially rendered inoperable. Equipment left behind included MRAPs (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles, Humvees, counter-rocket systems, artillery systems, mortar systems, small arms, rifles, uniforms, protective equipment, and helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft.

Afghan pilots flew some of the advanced aircraft to foreign countries, but much of the aircraft was abandoned. There are claims from the US military that aircraft were rendered inoperable, but these claims have not been verified. Analysts have also expressed concern that other governments, such as China and Russia may benefit from reverse engineering of abandoned equipment.
