Texting and Congregating: Daley and Top Cop Weis Blame Texting Suburbanites for Beach Disturbances

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said in a statement from City call that suburban youths are sending each other text messages to meet up and drink on city beaches.

“We know there’s texting going on, something going on in the suburban area with a lot of young adults, we know that … They text people, where people are going in congregation. So you make a number of arrests, a number of arrests were both city and suburban. We had a lot of suburban people arrested.”
– Mayor Richard Daley

Texting suburbanites are the target of criticism for beach disturbances from City Hall today as Mayor Richard Daley and police Superintendent Jody Weis vowed to keep Chicago beaches safe this summer.

Chicago police officers will increase patrols and the department brass will consider surveillance cameras following a public disturbance that resulted in the arrests of 22 young people recently near North Avenue Beach.

Recently …

Monday: Six Chicago teens were arrested (charged with battery to police, resisting arrest and battery) after an attack on an 18-year-old Barrington woman.

Monday, a 19-year-old Chicago jogger approached a group of teens as he passed them in a tunnel, and called out “on your left” for safe passage. The jogger was punched in the head several times. No known arrests.

Tuesday: Gang-related near North Avenue and Fullerton Avenue near the lakefront.

According to Superintendent Jody Weis, out of 22 recent arrests, 14 people were from the suburbs.

Daley recently pushed the City Council to more than double the number of liquor licenses near the lakefront. Most of the new licenses are not in effect yet.

Arlington Heights Crime Rate 2009 Down 26% from 2008

Crime Rate < 50% the National Average for Communities of Similar Size Population
The 2009 crime rate in Arlington Heights dropped by more than 26 percent as compared to 2008.

The crime rate indicates the prevalence of crime occurring across a given population. It is generally defined as the total number of crimes per 100,000 inhabitants. The 2009 national average crime rate for municipalities with populations ranging from 50,000-99,999 was 4,002 per 100,000 inhabitants. In comparison, the 2009 Arlington Heights crime rate was 1,735 per 100,000 inhabitants. This total constitutes a historic low for the Village.

In 1975, the crime rate in Arlington Heights reached its peak of 4,381 per 100,000 inhabitants. While Arlington Heights has benefited from a national downturn in overall crime rates, Police Chief Gerald Mourning credits the significant decrease to the Department’s hard work, proactive police tactics and innovative strategies, as well as a variety of community education, interaction and crime prevention initiatives.

Proactive efforts have included the targeting of specific crime categories such as Burglary from Motor Vehicle. These efforts, including crime analysis and surveillance activities, have resulted in increased arrests.

The Department’s education and prevention efforts include the Citizen Observer program, Crime Stoppers and the creation of Public Service Announcements (PSAs). In addition, the Department’s “Crime Opportunity Notice” program has played an integral role in citizen awareness. Since the program’s inception, police officers have issued approximately 3,500 written notices to residents and business owners informing them of changes or improvements they could make to target harden their vehicles, homes and businesses from crimes of opportunity.

Community support has also played a tremendous role in helping decrease the Village’s crime rate. Residents and members of the business community who participate in programs such as Crime Stoppers and the Citizens’ Police Academy provide essential assistance to the Department’s crime prevention and public education efforts.

Danville: Ruse Scam Artists Turning Up Elsewhere in Illinois, Too

They come to your door saying they need to trim your trees or check some pipes because there is a water pressure problem in your neighborhood. While one or more offenders keep you busy, another heads for rooms inside your house and steals money, jewelry — even safes.

Downstate Danville, Illinois and Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department is warning of scams that are similar to scams that have occurred in Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect.

In Danville, two white/males in their 30s or 40s with foreign accents were reported to be driving a gray, full-size newer model van with windows. They knocked on the door of a house and identified themselves as city employees in the area to prune trees. They tried to get a woman to go in the back yard with them, but she refused. Danville has no employees trimming trees in the backyards.

Also in Danville, a male/Hispanic in his late 20s tried three common scams in once incident. First he said he was working on tree trimming, but the woman said she had not trees in her backyard. Then he walked to the kitchen and turned on the water and said he was checking for frozen pipes. When the elderly woman asked the offender to leave, he demanded money for ‘an inspection’ — she refused, and he finally left the residence.

Outside the city in Vermillion County, two men ‘with strong accents’ were reported to be driving a dark-colored SUV and claiming to be Danville city employees in the area trimming trees at a house behind her property. One of the offenders led her to the back yard to show her where they would trim the trees, while the another offender, and possibly a third offender, went into her house and stole a safe and other items.
