Arlington Heights Police Seek Help Identifying Trader Joe’s Wallet Theft Suspects; Attempted Credit Card Use at Best Buy

Arlington Heights police received a report about 12:21 PM Tuesday September 5, 2017 of a theft at Traders Joe’s, 17 West Rand Road Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender, described as a 30-40 year-old male/Hispanic, approached an elderly female victim and asked her about a food item. The victim was confused with a question about reading a package label, but helped and looked away from her purse, which was in her cart. The victim later realized her wallet was missing when she was checking out at the cash register. The wallet contained cash, various credit cards, and a driver’s license.

Initially there was no information available on whether there was a second offender working with the known offender. Surveillance video at the Schaumburg Best Buy (shown here) showed that two suspect were connected to the use of the victim’s Chase Credit card. A female/Hispanic suspect is seen attempting to use the stolen credit card with the male present, according to Arlington Heights Police Department. Chase notified the victim that there was an attempted charge of $5,400 at the Schaumburg Best, in an attempt to purchase two Apple MacBook notebook computers.

Prior to the failed attempt at the Schaumburg Best Buy, the suspects wearing the same clothing were seen at the Arlington Heights Best Buy, where they attempted to use a different credit card authorized to the victim with a purchase attempt of $2,199.

The crime is reported to have occurred on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 between 12:15 PM and 12:20 PM. The elapsed time range including the time the crime could have occurred is 0:05 (hours: minutes).
