Police, firefighters and paramedics from Wheeling responded about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2026 to a report of an apartment fire in the block of 1100 Pleasant Run Drive in Wheeling.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered smoke showing from the roof of a two-story apartment building.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in a Wheeling apartment Saturday morning and stop it from spreading to the rest of the building. Firefighters entered the building with a hose line and extinguished the fire in the apartment’s bedroom and hallway.
The fire department response was elevated to a “Working Fire” at about 5:47 a.m., and the fire was extinguished by 6:02 a.m.
All residents of the building were able to safely evacuate on their own. Firefighters rescued a dog from the apartment unit where the fire started.
One person was evaluated by paramedics for possible injuries but signed a medical release. No other injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
The fire is under investigation. Early investigation indicated a lithium-ion device was found in the suspected area of origin. The Wheeling Fire Department did not indicate whether the lithium-ion device was a battery used improperly, or describe any circumstances about the storage or installation of the lithium-ion device.
The apartment involved in the fire was deemed uninhabitable. All other residents were able to return to the building.
Fire crews remained on scene throughout Saturday morning to ventilate the building and perform salvage and overhaul.
Firefighters, paramedics, and/or command officers from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Glenview, Northbrook, and Prospect Heights were also assigned to the fire scene.
Weather conditions were extremely cold during fire operations.
