Illinois State Police and firefighters and paramedics from Itasca responded about 11:43 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2025 to a report of a crash with a fire starting near the left shoulder of I-290 WEST near I-355. Itasca firefighters and paramedics were first on the scene, and reported the vehicle was fully-involved with fire. Illinois State Police on the scene reported a vehicle on fire in the left ditch of I-290 WEST under the flyover ramp to I-355 SOUTH near Itasca.
The fire was extinguished by about 12:02 a.m.
Illinois State Police troopers and firefighters discovered two adults and an infant deceased in the vehicle.
Traffic was diverted off to Lake Street.
According to the Illinois State Police, the driver of the crashed vehicle was westbound on I-290, went off the road into a ditch near the southbound I-355 ramp and crashed into a concrete bridge support column. The impact with the concrete bridge column caused the vehicle to ignite and become fully involved with fire. The crash killed two adults and a child inside, according to the Illinois State Police.
I-290 WEST was closed until about 4:14 a.m., according to the Illinois State Police.
Initially, the names of the victims were not released.
