
Wauconda, IL – Four Wauconda teens were recognized on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, for their quick thinking and responsible actions after discovering a handgun on a public sidewalk.
While riding their bikes near the Route 12 underpass on Route 176, the teens spotted what turned out to be a Colt .25 caliber automatic handgun lying on the sidewalk. Without hesitation, two of the boys remained at the scene to ensure no one else came in contact with the weapon, while the other two rode to the Wauconda Police Department to report their discovery.
Wauconda police officers responded immediately, safely recovered the unloaded firearm. Police officer secured the weapon into evidence storage for further investigation.
Wauconda Police Chief David Wermes praised the teens for their maturity and courage.

To show his appreciation, Chief Wermes treated the boys to ice cream at Dairy Queen — a small gesture for a big act of civic duty, according to the Wauconda Police Department.
The Wauconda Police Department did not disclose the date the weapon was discovered.
