Buffalo Grove police responded about 7:51 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2021 to the block of 900 Beechwood Road after a homeowner called 9-1-1 to report that a Ring camera installed at the home sent an alert, and that someone was in the house. The camera showed that an unknown male subject was on their property. The homeowners were with family a few blocks away, and told police that there should not be any people in the house.

Buffalo Grove police officers arrived to find a damaged open window on the lower level of the residence, and a suspect inside the home. At one point police could see the suspect running around the second floor. When police announced to the suspect that they arrived on the scene, the suspect fled into the basement of the home and barricaded himself inside the basement, according to Buffalo Grove Police Department.

Police officers tried several times to speak with the suspect, ordering him to come out of the house. They called him “suspect” and told him that the house was surrounded by police. Police ordered the suspect to come out with his hands up. They also warned the suspect that if he did not surrender, a police dog would enter the home and “fight” him or “bite” him — it was difficult to determine which word was used. Either way, the suspect did not comply.

Buffalo Grove police stood inside the foyer of the home in front of the basement stairs and attempted to communicate with the suspect. The suspect initially refused to respond. An ambulance was staged as a standby ambulance in case of any injuries during the standoff, and the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) was assigned to the scene with their tactical team that is specialized in resolving situation with barricaded subjects. An armored Bearcat truck stood by at the front of the home. Armored NIPAS personnel took positions inside the house and surrounded the house. Police used several technological devices to pinpoint the location of the suspect inside the house. A police negotiator also responded, and police said a peaceful surrender occurred at 11:41 p.m.

Police assessed the suspect and identified him as Anthony Garcia, age 25, of Rolling Meadows. He was arrested and taken into Buffalo Grove police custody, charged with felony residential burglary charges. He was brought outside the home by about 11:50 p.m. and he was secured by police and was assessed by paramedics. Garcia was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released back into police custody for processing. On Monday, March 22, 2021 he was transported to the Cook County courthouse in Rolling Meadows for a bond hearing.

A rumor spread on Facebook Saturday night that a shooting had occurred at the Beechwood Road location, and Buffalo Grove police confirmed that there was no shooting and that no shots were fired during the incident. At 11:34 p.m. Saturday, the official Village of Buffalo Grove Facebook page administrator posted a message saying, “Good Evening. Many rumors have been posted on social media regarding police activity in the area of Beachwood and Weidner. There is no active threat to the community or shots fired, the activity is related to a burglary investigation.” The first official statement about the incident was published on the Village of Buffalo Grove website today, Monday, March 22, 2021.

Buffalo Grove police officials explained that their membership in the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) facilitated a safe resolution, using highly trained police personnel specializing in hostage and barricade negotiations. A large number of NIPAS personnel began arriving by about 9:00 p.m.

K-9 units from several police agencies, including Arlington Heights, also responded to the scene.

Garcia’s conviction of the felony residential burglary charge could result in a 15-year prison sentence if convicted.
