CBS 2’s Vince Gerasole reports on a security video that shows the impact when the driver of an SUV crossed the railroad tracks as a Metra train approached.

A security camera at Arlington Dental captured the crash involving a white Jeep SUV and Metra passenger train #642. The crash injured the driver of the SUV, but the injuries did not initially appear to be life-threatening. A Metra train passenger also reported suffering a head injury during the crash. The patient was located on the train by paramedics by about 11:50 a.m., and transferred to an ambulance that was waiting on the south side of the railroad tracks.

The first paramedic ambulance crew on the scene transported the driver, who was the sole occupant of the white Jeep SUV. The driver was removed from the vehicle, placed in Stokes basket and transferred to the ambulance waiting at Arlington Heights Road.

Both patients were transported to Northwest Community Hospital.

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded to the crash at about 11:37 a.m Monday, February 24, 2020 to the car vs train crash at Northwest Highway and Arlington Heights Road.

An inbound Metra passenger train hit a white Jeep SUV and pushed the SUV about about 500 feet east of the intersection. The vehicle crashed with Metra train Number 642.

CBS Chicago crews on scene obtained security video from Arlington Dental at 15 North Arlington Heights Road. The video showed the white SUV facing west in the middle of the intersection of Northwest Highway and Arlington Heights Road. The driver then made a left turn to southbound Arlington Heights Road and crossed the path of the oncoming Metra train before being struck. From the security video available it appears the motorist arrived at the intersection from westbound Northwest Highway (US 14) east of Arlington Heights Road and may have panicked being stranded in the intersection with the traffic signal change for the train. In addition to the oncoming train, there was also oncoming eastbound traffic on Northwest Highway.

The female driver, Kelly O’Brien, 60, was charged with one count of disobeying an activated crossing by Metra police, according to Metra.

Arlington Heights Police Department captured drone video images, but Metra is the lead investigating law enforcement agency for this incident.

The information in this article is an early report published before complete summary information was confirmed or released by police or fire authorities.
