Deputy Chief Andrew Whowell was an extremely supportive and reliable servant to the community with a heart of gold and a great sense of humor.

Even in retirement he served by using his carpentry skills to build homes for Habitat for Humanity in the southeast United States.

He was enjoying retirement as a resident of Arlington Heights and had recently served at St Peter Lutheran Church and School on Thanksgiving weekend just before his death.

As commander or deputy chief, Andrew Whowell was frequently an outgoing and informative spokesperson for the Arlington Heights Police Department. Whowell gave the first press conference when Arlington Heights Police Officer Michael McEvoy was shot and critically injured on Thursday December 12, 2013 near Palatine Road and Arlington Heights Road. After the first press conference when McEvoy’s identity was released, Whowell described McEvoy as a “Go-to Guy” and highly regarded on the Arlington Heights Police Department.

He was also the first official to offer information about a frightening chainsaw attack in an office complex on Golf Road in Arlington Heights.
