A suspect is in custody following a bank robbery in suburban Rolling Meadows Saturday morning, according to the FBI (Mike Puccinelli/CBS Chicago).

Authorities released the identity of Saturday’s Fifth Third Bank robbery suspect as Stephen Galati, age 66. According to a criminal complaint filed by federal prosecutors Monday, November 18, 2019, Galati was charged with bank robbery. He is accused of taking $2,510 while threatening to shoot a teller at the Fifth Third Bank branch at 1801 West Algonquin Road in Rolling Meadows at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2019.

Earlier Saturday morning, Galati dropped off a relative at work in Rolling Meadows and said he was going to go grocery shopping, pick up prescriptions and run errands, according to authorities in court.

Actually, Galati is accused of walked into the Fifth Third Bank in Rolling Meadows bank and handing a demand note to a teller. The note read: “This is a robbery. Don’t do anything stupid.” According to the criminal complaint, Galati also told the teller, “Do as I told you, or I will shoot you.”

Galati left the bank, taking his bag filled with cash. Galati walked into an adjacent restaurant. Next he was spotted in Schaumburg driving a black Ford Fusion that matched the description of the vehicle drove away from the bank. Schaumburg police officers on patrol reported they saw the car speed past them on Basswood Road north of Golf Road while the driver tossed the bag from the moving vehicle. Basswood Road is located west of Plum Grove Road near Portillo’s, Bahama Breeze and Barnes and Noble. A search of the bag didn’t turn up any cash, but officers said they found a white hair net, pair of black gloves and sunglasses.

Eventually, Galati entered the eastbound lanes of the Jane Addams Tollway (Interstate 90) at Roselle Road and was spotted cruising around Terminals 2 and 3 at O’Hare International Airport. Galati drove on I-190 and re-entered the eastbound lanes of I-90, now the Kennedy Expressway. At some point the police following turned in to a police pursuit, and Galati exited the Kennedy Expressway at Cumberland Avenue, and traveled northbound from Rosemont toward Park Ridge and Edison Park. Chicago police and Park Ridge police became involved, and the chase ended in Edison Park — about 100 yards east of the Park Ridge border with the Chicago neighborhood. While police were following Galati’s vehicle, another set of police units sped ahead around the block to head him off. Galati was surround and stopped while he was northwestbound on Olmsted Avenue between Ozark Avenue and Overhill Avenue. Galati was arrested in the block of 6800 North Olmsted Avenue in Edison Park, Chicago.

Police reported they saw money being tossed from the suspect’s car. When some motorists stopped on the expressway to pickup the money, police temporarily closed the expressway for safety, and to gather the cash and evidence for their case.

Police recovered $2,122 and a GPS tracker included with the cash package taken from the bank. The cash and GPS tracker were located by police in the suspect’s black duffel bag that was tossed out on the I-190 expressway near East River Road, according to the FBI’s federal complaint.
