Eric Shultz: “Caught some strange light falling from the sky up by Youngstown tonight!,” after Ring doorbell camera captured image of meteor.

A greenish bright light from a meteor was captured by multiple cameras in northern Florida about 11:52 PM ET Saturday March 2019.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a flash from the meteor was also captured on the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) on board the GOES-16 satellite. The GLM takes hundreds of images each second and maps the paths of lightning storms, and disseminates lightning information in near real time on a continuous basis with other observable data, such as radar returns, cloud images, and other meteorological variables. The GLM normally provides invaluable data to aid weather forecasters in detecting severe storms in time to give advance warning to the public. In Saturday’s case the GLM detected the meteor near the area where the panhandle connects to the main peninsula of Florida, between Tallahassee and Gainesville.

In the GLM image below, a line of thunderstorms runs southwest to northeast from Mississippi to Alabama to Georgia. However, a small little flash — almost just a pixel or a couple of pixels — dimly flashes northwest of Gainesville and southeast of Tallahassee, but closer to the small towns of Hampton Springs, Perry, Athena and Shady Grove.
