Police, firefighters and paramedics from Wheeling responded about 9:02 a.m. Thursday, November 20, 2025, to a report of a house fire in the block of 800 North Norman Lane of in Wheeling.
Firefighters on arrival discovered flames showing on the back, second floor deck that were extending into the attic. Smoke was coming out the front windows, and deposited soot on the siding above the front windows, but the charring and significant destruction was at the rear of the house, which caused the home to be uninhabitable just one week before Thanksgiving.
Four residents escaped with the help of police officers, and a pet was rescued by firefighters. A Wheeling Fire Department ladder truck crew took the roof from the front, left side of the home.
There were no injuries to residents or firefighters, but the residents were assessed by paramedics. None of the residents were transported to the hospital, but the residents are being assisted by the Wheeling Police Department Social Services Division.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A routine investigation was assigned to Wheeling Fire Department investigators.
The fire call was upgraded to a Working Fire level, and firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Inverness Fire Protection District, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, Long Grove Fire Protection District, Mount Prospect, and Prospect Heights Fire Protection District were assigned to the fire scene.
The fire was extinguished quickly by firefighters, and the homes next-door to the west and south were not damaged.
