Police, firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 6:35 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2025 to a report that a vehicle crashed with a Metra train on the Union Pacific Northwest Line at Arlington Heights Road and Northwest Highway in downtown Arlington Heights.
Police, firefighters, and paramedics arrived to discover a train stopped just west of Arlington Heights Road in the outbound tracks from Chicago, and a Toyota Camry also west of Arlington Heights Road by about 100 feet on the inbound tracks. One driver was inside the vehicle, and were no other occupants in the Toyota Camry.
The driver was transferred to an ambulance and transported to an undisclosed hospital. Initial reports indicated that driver suffered critical injuries. There was significant damage to the Toyota Camry on the driver’s side. The driver of the Toyota Camry was southbound on Arlington Heights Road from Northwest Highway while the Metra train was westbound (outbound from Chicago) and approaching the Arlington Heights downtown train station at 45 West Northwest Highway.

One passenger, toward the back of the train in one of the rear cars that was led outbound by the locomotive, told CARDINAL NEWS that he slept through the crash. There were eight Metra passenger cars trailing the locomotive. The stopped train blocked Evergreen Avenue and Dunton Avenue after striking the car. The train traveled more than the length of all eight passenger cars before coming to a stop.
Upon impact the Toyota Camry was tossed further west of Arlington Heights Road. The Toyota Camry was a hybrid, and firefighters took extra precautions, staying on the scene with a water-charged hose line in case there was a fire incident involving the hybrid’s battery. There was no fire, and the Toyota Camry was towed from the scene with no unusual incidents.
There was a debris field across the railroad tracks, and railroad repair crews arrived to inspect the railroad tracks.
A fire engine from Glenview was also assigned to the scene because the fire engine crew from Glenview was on station standby in Arlington Heights because of a working house fire about an hour earlier on Mulberry Lane near Lake Arlington. Other mutual aid fire companies were also assigned to the vehicle vs train crash while Arlington Heights firefighters were busy extinguishing a stove fire in a kitchen.

The crash significantly affected mass transit and road travel.
Metra outbound (westbound) Train #723 was involved in the collision. Metra trains near the Arlington Heights Metra Station were stopped in both directions, and didn’t resume movement until just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
