Two firefighters were killed and a third was critically wounded when an offender set fire to an open field, shot at three firefighters that responded to the fire, and then apparently killed himself.
Firefighters from three companies responded about 1:21 p.m. PT on Sunday, June 29, 2025 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in the city’s Canfield Mountain Natural Area to a report of a wildfire on the back side of the mountain. At 2:00 p.m. firefighters reported that they were under fire by a shooter. Approximately 20 acres were intentionally set on fire a plan to ambush the firefighters. Two firefighters were pronounced dead at the scene. One of the deceased firefighters worked for Coeur d’Alene and one firefighter worked for Kootenai County. The Kootenai County officials did not initially release the identity of the murdered firefighters. A press conference was led by Kootnanai County Sheriff Bo Morris at 9:30 p.m.
About 300 law enforcement officers responded to the scene, and some exchanged gunfire with the shooter.
A deceased male and a firearm were found nearby on Canfield Mountain by SWAT at around 7:40 p.m. while the wildfire continued to burn. High-power sporting rifles were reportedly used in the shooting, but Sheriff Bob Morris did not confirm the weapon or weapons used. Police detected a cell phone signal, which helped located the offender. The wildfire was rapidly approaching the location of the suspected deceased shooter, and the police moved quickly to remove the body. Sheriff Norris indicated the preservation of the crime scene was not perfect because of the circumstances. Sheriff Norris indicated that he expected more weapons would be discovered when investigators returned to the scene after the fire extinguished.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said it was initially unclear whether the man shot himself, but that the initial investigation indicated that the deceased male was the only shooter. The sheriff told reporters that the attacker also started the forest fire.

Police radio communications monitored on a radio scanner indicated that officers had located a car possibly linked to the shooter. A no-fly zone for unauthorized aircraft and drones was designated over the mountain.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are assigned to the scene. A US Customs and Border Protection helicopter, two Spokane County Sheriff helicopters. A Idaho National Guard Blackhawk helicopter was also placed on stand by, in case the helicopter was needed.
Three Life Flight Network air medical services helicopters were assigned to the area if needed.
The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department led a procession from Kootenai Health to coroner’s office in Spokane in memory of the two deceased firefighters.
Sheriff Bob Morris made a statement at the press conference that citizen journalists should use caution regarding breaking news broadcast of details that involve the injuries of first responders.
Coeur d’Alene is located near Interstate 90 in the center of Kootenai County in western Idaho, just east of Spokane, Washington.
