A 57-year-old Woodstock man was seriously injured, and a 69-year-old Huntley man was injured following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Illinois Route 176 and North Union Road in unincorporated McHenry County, near Union.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Marengo Fire/Rescue District, and Union Fire Protection District responded about 7:59 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2025 to a report of a two-vehicle crash on Illinois Route 176 at the intersection with North Union Road in Seneca Township in McHenry County. The vehicles involved were heavily damaged and located in a field at the northwest corner of the intersection.
The 69-year-old driver of a Lexus was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital and is in stable condition. The 57-year-old driver of a GMC pickup truck was airlifted from the scene to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he is listed in serious, but stable condition, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a 2024 Lexus LX 600 was traveling northbound on North Union Road while the driver of a 2021 GMC pickup truck was traveling westbound on Illinois Route 176. The driver of the Lexus failed to stop for the stop sign and entered the intersection causing the two vehicles to collide. The crash caused both vehicles to exit the roadway to the northwest and they came to rest in a field northwest of the intersection, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. Illinois Route 176 is not a controlled at this intersection location and traffic on Union Road is controlled by clearly posted stop signs.
Route 176 is a two-lane highway (one lane in each direction) with left turn lanes to both directions of Union Road, which is a two-way country road.
The drivers were wearing seat belts and airbags were activated. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit.
