Woman Dies 35 Hours After She Was Hit By Cook County Sheriff’s SUV on Milwaukee Ave, Glenview, Des Plaines Border

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Glenview responded about 5:07 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2025 to a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle in the block of 9800 Milwaukee Avenue in Glenview. When Glenview police arrived on the scene, they discovered a Cook County Ford Interceptor SUV (Ford Explorer style) with front-end damage that had been involved in a collision with a pedestrian.

A pedestrian with life-threatening injuries was rushed by Glenview Fire Department paramedics to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.




The victim, Mercedes Smith, age 28, of Chicago, was listed in critical condition and then died Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at Lutheran General Hospital. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Mercedes Smith was pronounced dead about 4:05 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

The Glenview Police Department is investigating the fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian crash with the assistance of the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force Major Crash Assistance Team (NORTAF-MCAT).

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating with the investigation.

In video captured at the scene, the involved Cook County Sheriff’s police vehicle appeared to be stopped in the center southbound lane near the centerline of Milwaukee Avenue, about 2500 feet northwest of Golf Road.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office listed the Incident address as the 9800 block of Milwaukee Avenue in Des Plaines. The crash scene was located near the borders of Glenview, Des Plaines and Niles.




The Speed Limit on Milwaukee Avenue is 40 MPH according to Google Maps Street View images captured July 2024. Milwaukee Avenue is a four-lane roadway (two lanes in each direction) with a painted double-yellow line. The roadway is curbed with no shoulder on the northbound (east) side, and a vehicle-width paved shoulder on the southbound (west) side of Milwaukee Avenue. There are commercial parking lots with restaurants on the west side of the street, and dense woods on the east side of the street.
