Demietris Shorter, age 35, of Davenport, Iowa turned himself in to the Chicago Police Department about 5:50 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2025, following a fatal shooting at a hotel in the River North neighborhood. The Level at 369 West Grand Avenue consists of a hotel and furnished extended stay accommodations.

Shorter checked in on February 21, 2025, and on February 22, 2025 just after 8:00 p.m., a hotel guest next door to Shorter’s hotel room reported hearing gunshots, and called the front desk, but nobody answered at the front desk. The guest in the neighboring hotel room did not call 9-1-1.

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Chicago responded around 8:15 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2025 to a report of a shooting at a hotel in the block of 300 Grand Avenue in Chicago.

About 8:19 p.m., Demetrius Shorter was seen leaving the hotel after approaching the front desk. Then he asked for another key to his room. He left briefly, and returned to the desk. A 29-year-old woman, who was walking toward the door and reception desk, nearly bumped into Shorter, and Shorter allegedly shot her in the neck, according to to information gathered at a pre-trial hearing.

Police on arrival discovered the 29-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the neck inside the lobby of the hotel at a corner on Grand Avenue at New Orleans Street.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the victim told police she was shot by an unknown male offender who fled the scene in a tan SUV that was last seen heading eastbound on Grand Avenue. Initially a detailed physical description of the offender was not available, and after investigation of surveillance video, the vehicle Shorter used to flee was determined to be a black Kia SUV. The vehicle was found abandoned with a phone case containing Shorter’s Iowa driver’s license and a credit card with his name on the card.

Paramedics transported the shooting victim in the lobby to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she was listed in good condition.




During further on-scene investigation, police found a 32-year-old female/black inside Shorter’s hotel room with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder. The woman was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she died.

Area Three detectives are investigating the shooting. Investigators recovered two 9mm shell casings in Shorter’s hotel room and another shell casing in the stairwell. A shell casing was also discovered in the lobby.

Initially, no indication or police information release regarding whether the shooting was targeted or random, or whether any of the victims knew each other.

Demetris Latroy Shorter was booked in Cook County Jail Division 11 on March 1, 2025. He is detained pre-trial *NO BOND*. Shorter’s next court date is March 19, 2025.
