Michael Kovac and his wife Karina Maher’s home has fire resilient features, which may have contributed to the house surviving the Palisades Fire (ABC 7 Chicago). YouTube Tips ⓘ
One house on Chautauqua Boulevard remained standing. Owners Michael Kovac and his wife Karina Maher deconstructed a 1950s home that they bought, and built it with sustainable systems and fire resistance systems.
The fire resistant features included …
fiber cement siding (fire-resistant cladding),
a high performance Class A Roof,
a planted green roof, and
commercial glazing (insulated glass) that prevents radiant heat from transferring heat inside and causing spontaneous combustion of material.
Additionally, the property included an exterior system at the back of the house — a FogTec fire retardant system — sprinkler nozzles that distribute fire retardant on demand. Michael Kovac, an architect, anticipated that a brush fire could possibly advance toward the back of the house from a hill behind their property. In fact, a fire did advance up the hill in their backyard, and the FogTec was activated.
This house in Los Angeles, owned by environmentalists Karina Maher and her husband Michael Kovac, was built with an emphasis on sustainability and wildfire resilience (Rueters). YouTube Tips ⓘ
