According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Christina Musil, age 35, was sitting inside a Ford Explorer SUV while parked on the right shoulder, when a single-unit Kenworth truck was driven or veered off the road and rear-ended the police vehicle. Initially it was unknown why the truck veered off the roadway.

When Deputy Musil did not respond on radio to the dispatch center, a telecommunicator from the dispatch center attempted to call Deputy Musil, but got no answer on her phone. An off-duty paramedic was on the scene before deputies arrived. The paramedic and deputy first on the scene after the crash discovered the deputy unresponsive. The deputy requested that dispatch advise the responding paramedics in the dispatched ambulance to expedite to the scene, and began CPR.

The deputy was treated by paramedics and transported to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb with life-threatening injuries. She was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
