A man was found stabbed with fatal wounds early Monday, February 26, 2024 at the Park Butterfield Apartment Homes in Mundelein. On Tuesday afternoon the victim’s identity was released by the Lake County Coroner’s Office as Michael Murphy of Mundelein.
Mundelein police and Countryside Fire Protection District firefighters and paramedics responded about 5:10 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2024 to the 1400 block of Downing Place in response to a 911 call requesting assistance for an unknown problem in the apartment building. Upon arrival officers found a woman on the scene, and then an unconscious man bleeding from his torso.
The male victim suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest and neck. CPR, and Advanced Life Support treatment was administered at the scene by Countryside Fire Protection District paramedics.
The man was transported with treatment ongoing to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
A crime scene was established, where indications were present that an altercation had occurred.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force was notified and responded to assist in the investigation.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the hospital.
The woman at scene suffered apparent non-life-threatening injuries, and was also transported to the hospital by Countryside paramedics.
The deceased has been identified as 53-year-old Michael Murphy, of Mundelein.
On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Mr. Murphy died from multiple sharp force injuries, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office did not initially indicate that the death was ruled a homicide.
The incident remains under investigation by the Mundelein Police Department and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.
There have been domestic-related calls at the crime scene address, but there are no court cases involving an Order of Protection or Battery connected to the victim, according to the Lake County Circuit Court records.
