An Arlington Heights police officer, who transferred to serve as a Kane County Sheriff’s deputy in December 2022, was critically injured Monday morning in a crash on Route 47 in Kane County. Brian Anderson worked as a police officer in Arlington Heights from May 2019 until December 2022.




Kane County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Pingree Grove and Hampshire fire protection districts responded about 6:56 a.m. Monday, October 23, 2023 to a report of a severe head-on crash involving a Kane County Sheriff’s SUV squad and a Dually Dodge Ram pickup truck that was towing a loaded trailer on Route 47 just south of Plank Road in Hampshire Township. The crash was located about 5 miles south of Interstate 90 and was southwest of Pingree Grove. A dually truck usually means a truck with double wheels at the rear axle.

Firefighters and paramedics from Pingree Grove and Hampshire fire protection districts were assigned to the crash. While en route, a dispatcher advised that the deputy was talking, and said that he said he was trapped in his police SUV. The first Pingree Grove fire crew on arrival reported heavy damage involving a pickup truck and an SUV, and requested a medical helicopter to the scene.

A third ambulance was requested and an additional engine (Hampshire Fire Protection District) was assigned for the landing zone by about 7:08 a.m. LifeNet was inbound with a 20 minute ETA. The landing zone was on Plank Road just of Route 47 in the back of the Shri Shirdi Sai Temple Chicago property. Plank Road was closed between Route 47 and Brier Hill Road. Route 47 was also closed south of Plank Road due to the crash.




Additional firefighters and an additional engine were assigned for extrication by about 7:17 a.m. The Hampshire crew may have been diverted from the landing zone up to the crash scene at this point in time.

The LifeNet helicopter was in the landing zone by about 7:40 a.m. The helicopter was airborne and en route to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove about 8:30 a.m. Extrication time for the Kane County Sheriff’s deputy was not confirmed, but may have been about 7:52 a.m.

According to the Kane County Sheriffs Office, the deputy was southbound on Illinois Route 47 when his squad SUV was struck head-on by the Dodge Ram pick up truck and trailer. Initially, the Dodge Ram driver was heading northbound on Illinois Route 47, and then attempted to stop in traffic. The driver of the Dodge Ram pickup truck came into oncoming traffic, striking the Kane County Sheriffs Office squad SUV.

The Illinois State Police are investigating the crash. The Speed Limit on Route 47 south of Plank Road is 55 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View images captured June 2018. Illinois Route 47 is a two-lane rural highway near the scene of the crash.
