Police, firefighters and paramedics from Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights responded about 5:37 p.m. Monday, July 31, 2023 to a report that a boy’s legs were pinned under a van at Arlington Heights Road and Dundee Road in Buffalo Grove near the border with Arlington Heights.

Police were first on the scene and discovered the boy and his bicycle were under a white work van stopped in the right lane of Dundee Road just west of Arlington Heights Road.

Extra crews were dispatched to work on extrication, which involved the used of inflated air bags to carefully lift the front of the van to perform a stable extrication operation. Ladders were being transported on roof mounts on the van, and firefighters made sure the ladders were also secured and stable.

Witnesses at the scene by Starbucks said firefighters jacked up the front of the van and removed the teen’s bicycle first, and then removed the boy. Witnesses said the boy was conscious when he was transferred to a Buffalo Grove Fire Department ambulance. The 13 year-old teen was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. The witnesses, who use wheelchairs with raised flags, said the intersection is very busy, and that they are extremely cautious when they cause the intersection.

The aftermath appeared to show a relatively good outcome because the bike was immediately removed from the scene, and the police did not set up for an extended crash investigation — as they would have in a crash that results in life-threatening or fatal injuries.

As is normal with HIPAA compliance regarding injuries at crash scenes, no details were available regarding the injuries that were suffered by the boy. Paramedics assessed the boy for a significant amount of time at the scene in the ambulance before transporting.

Westbound Dundee Road was shut down during extrication, but was immediately re-opened following extrication. No right turns from southbound Arlington Heights Road to westbound Dundee Road were permitted while emergency crews were on the scene.

The driver of white Ford work van that was involved in the crash with the bicycle remained at the scene, and he and his van were released after a short time. Initially, no information was available regarding whether anyone was issued a citation. Buffalo Grove Police Department is investigating the crash.

The crash scene was located at the northwest corner at the same intersection where Buffalo Grove High School is located at the northeast corner. The intersection is a fast-moving, wide and busy intersection. Southbound Arlington Heights Road has a right turn lane separated by a traffic signal island from two southbound lanes and a turn lane from southbound to eastbound.

Northbound Arlington Heights Road has one left turn lane to westbound Dundee Road, and two straight away northbound lanes.

Westbound Dundee Road has two left turn lanes to southbound Arlington Heights Road with two westbound lanes east of the intersection, and then two straight away westbound lanes where the crash occurred.

Eastbound Dundee Road has two left turn lanes to northbound Arlington Heights Road with two eastbound lanes west of the intersection, and then two straight away eastbound lanes east of the intersection.

The Speed Limit of westbound Dundee Road and eastbound Dundee Road west and east of of the intersection is 35 MPH.

LIVE TRAFFIC MAP …

According to Google Maps street view images from August 2022, there is no 35 MPH Speed Limit sign before Arlington Heights Road for the westbound lanes of Dundee Road west of the Buffalo Grove High School driveway or west of the intersection with Old Arlington Heights. This is unusual since the high school is located in this stretch of Dundee Road.

The Speed Limit is 40 MPH on Arlington Heights Road both north and south of the intersection with Dundee Road. There is no slow down on northbound Arlington Heights Road on the approach to Buffalo Grove High School and the intersection with Dundee Road.

With Monday’s crash there have been three serious crashes involving pedestrians (one on a bike) near the intersection of Dundee Road and Arlington Heights Road — one crash that occurred on Friday, November 13, 2020 resulted in a fatality.

A Buffalo Grove High School student was hit by a small food delivery van on Friday, November 4, 2022, and was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.
