Metra Train Locomotive Fire on UP Northwest Line Near Prospect Ave and George St Mount Prospect

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Mount Prospect and Metra police responded about 4:10 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2023 to report of a traction motor blew with flames showing near Prospect Avenue and George Street in Mount Prospect.

Firefighters on arrival within four minutes reported no active fire involving the train. A Des Plaines ladder truck was also assigned to the fire, but was immediately released.

Firefighters inspected the train locomotive to make sure the Metra personnel that extinguished the fire were able to completely extinguish the fire. The was reported to be a small fire. Outbound train #633 was the train affected by the fire. Approximately 300 train passengers were evacuated from train #633.




Inbound and outbound trains were on the move again by 5:34 p.m. with extensive delays due to a mechanical issue on outbound train #633, according to Metra.

Metra outbound train #635 was designated to accommodate Train #633 passengers, and would not operate past Cumberland.

Metra first announced at 4:26 p.m. that inbound and outbound trains were halted near Cumberland due to a mechanical issue on train #633. Delay times were initially unknown.

Metra announced at 4:58 p.m. that Train #639, scheduled to arrive Des Plaines at 4:40 PM, will not operate past Jefferson Park due to a mechanical failure on train #633. Outbound train #641 will be the next train making all stops to Harvard.
