Woman Dies After Head-on Crash on Route 59 in Antioch

Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Antioch, and Lake County Sheriff’s deputies responded about approximately 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2023 to a report of a crash with injuries at Route 59 near Bowles Road in Antioch. The crash involved a Kia Sportage and a Ford F-250 pickup truck.

The driver of the Kia, an 81-year-old woman, was flown by a REACT medical transport helicopter to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where she was pronounced dead, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Despite care and medical treatment, she succumbed to her injuries suffered in the crash. The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified.




Preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the Kia Sportage traveling southbound on Route 59 crossed the centerline and collided with a Ford F-250 pickup truck. Based on the seriousness of the crash the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County was activated to assist in the investigation.




The deceased has been identified as 81-year-old Gayle Thielke, of Antioch. On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, an autopsy was completed at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary results indicate that Ms. Thielke died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash.

The crash investigation is ongoing by the Antioch Police Department and MCAT. The Speed Limit on Route 59 is 45 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View images. The intersection is located on a segment of Route 59 that curves. Motorist are alerted to a staggered intersection, Landmark Way and Bowles Road intersect Route 59 in close proximity. The curve also includes a low point in the roadway due to a slight “valley” in the roadway.
