A 26-year-old male shooting suspect, who was on parole from Stateville Correctional Center, is accused of a gang-related shooting that occurred Tuesday, October 18, 2022 near Aspen Drive and Aztec Lane. The shooting was previously reported on Seneca Lane near Burning Bush Lane in Mount Prospect where the shooting victim was discovered. He was ordered held without bond Tuesday, February 7, 2023, charged with attempted First Degree Murder.

Christian J. Longsworth, has been known to live in Prospect Heights, but his current address was not released. Longsworth was booked on unrelated charges in Des Plaines on October 25, 2022. An Attempted First Degree Murder conviction is punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

Longworth is in in custody in Cook County Jail Division 11. His charges include Attempted Murder, Aggravated Fleeing, Domestic Battery, and Criminal Activity while on Parole. Some or all of the other charges may be unrelated to the Attempted Murder Charge.

According to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office prosecuting the Attempted Murder Charge, five juveniles and teens, ages 10 to 17, left Aspen Trails Park near Frost Elementary School in Mount Prospect at about 8:24 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2022 after playing basketball. Another group approached, yelled gang-related slurs, and began shooting at the juveniles, according to a police report.

A 15-year-old boy was shot near his groin, and police and paramedics were dispatched to a location east of the scene when a neighbor call police reporting an injured and bleeding boy in his backyard. The 15 year-old boy was treated by Mount Prospect Fire Department paramedics and transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

None of the victims were able to identify anyone from the shooter’s group, but a nearby surveillance camera captured suspects exiting a vehicle and approaching the group leaving the park. Gunshots and voices could be heard on the recorded video, which showed suspects leaving the scene in a light-colored sedan after the shots were fired. The injured victim fled near Seneca Lane and Burning Bush Lane and was found injured in a backyard east of the shooting scene.

Police officers from Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights police departments, recognized Longsworth’s voice from the security video. Longworth has had a significant criminal history and interaction with police officers in the area.

About 9:18 p.m. October 18, 2022, police working on the case became aware of a crash involving a vehicle that matched the description of the sedan near the scene of the shooting. The occupants fled the crashed vehicle, which police learned was owned by the father of a friend of Longsworth. The car owner later told police he believed his son had the car that night. The crash occurred in Wheeling, about four miles north of the shooting.

Analysis of data from Longsworth’s cellphone indicated his phone was near the Mount Prospect shooting scene and the Wheeling crash scene when the reported incidents occurred. Cellphone forensics also revealed several messages, including a message sent October 23, 2022 by Longsworth that described he was in trouble with the police with a link referring to a news article about the Mount Prospect shooting near Frost Elementary School.

At the shooting scene in Mount Prospect, police recovered two .380-caliber bullet casings and eleven 9-millimeter casings, according the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Police later determined some of the casings found at the shooting scene were fired from a weapon Longsworth possessed when he was arrested on unrelated charges October 24, 2022 in Des Plaines.

Longsworth has previous convictions for Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding (CUSTODY DATE: July 20, 2021) and Aggravated Robbery with a Firearm (CUSTODY DATE: November 3, 2015). He also has recent cases pending with charges of unlawful use of a weapon while on parole, and fleeing and eluding.
