The death of of Claude Sonday, age 75, of Bull Valley was announced officially Wednesday, November 30, 2022 when authorities released the identity of a pilot killed five days earlier. Claude Sonday found dead at the scene of a small aircraft crash that occurred on Friday, November 25, 2022 in a wooded area about one-quarter to one-half mile east of Galt Airport at 5112 Greenwood Road near Wonder Lake.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday night, November 25, 2022 — about three hours after the plane crash occurred — that sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a single airplane crash involving a model EA-300LC, near Galt Airport in Wonder Lake at 5:15 p.m.

The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The area east of Galt Airport between the airport property and Wonder Lake Road consists of open fields, wooded areas and farmland.




The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office contacted the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to continue the investigation.

McHenry, Harvard, Wonder Lake, Richmond, and Spring Grove fire departments and McHenry County Coroner’s Office responded to scene, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

The Extra Flugzeugbau EA300, manufactured in Germany, is a two-seat aerobatic single-engine aircraft. The crashed aircraft was registered with the FAA … N361LX. The FAA listed the location of fatal crash as Greenwood, Illinois — a small village of about 255 people just south of Galt Airport in McHenry County.

The aircraft had valid registration, and the registered owner was listed as Dog House Aviation, LLC., located in Bull Valley in McHenry County. Claude Sonday is listed as a manager of the LLC in recent records from the Illinois Secretary of State.

The EA 300/LC was manufactured in 2017.
