Police, firefighters and paramedics from Rolling Meadows responded about 3:01 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2022 to a report that Nicor needed firefighters to ventilate a house in the block of 2600 Benton Street in Rolling Meadows, Palatine Township.
Several Nicor crews were working on Benton Street and reported that there was blowing gas inside a home.
Firefighters on arrival reported Nicor in front of a 2-story single-family home. Nicor was working on repairing an outdoor leak and getting to the gas main to shut off the gas, but their was blowback from the leak outside that was filling the house up with natural gas.
One home was already evacuated, but the home next-door was also evacuated.
Firefighters monitored gas level readings and ventilated where necessary. Nicor was able to shut down the gas leak that was occurring outdoors by about 3:45 p.m. as firefighters continued to clear the gas from interior locations.
Firefighters were possibly able to clear the gas from the interior by just opening the windows of the home. It wasn’t initially clear whether they needed to use a fan as an additional measure to clear the gas from inside the home.
Benton Street and Fairfax Avenue were blocked by Rolling Meadows police officers for about one hour while firefighters and Nicor crews secured the scene. When necessary, police officers assisted neighbors in their neighborhood.
