Identities of 3 Adults Released After Fatal Crash on I-90 in McHenry County — Acura Driver Was Wrong-Way Driver

5 Children from Rolling Meadows Killed

Illinois State Police District 15 released preliminary information from a fatal crash on I-90 WEST that killed 7 and seriously injured one man on I-90 WEST at Mile Marker 33.5 in southwest McHenry County. The identities of two adults that were killed, and one adult that was seriously injured were also released at 6:12 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2022.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a blue 2005 Chevrolet full-size van (Unit 2) was traveling westbound on Interstate 90 WEST near milepost 33.5. For unknown reasons, the driver of a gray 2010 Acura TSX (Unit 1), was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-90, and struck the front of the blue van head-on. Both vehicles became engulfed in flames. The driver of the blue van sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital. The driver of the Acura and six passengers in the blue van were pronounced deceased at the scene.

All westbound lanes of Interstate 90 westbound near milepost 33 were closed for the investigation with traffic being diverted off at Anthony Road; all lanes were reopened at 9:25 a.m. The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time, according to the Illinois State Police.

The driver of the Acura TSX was identified as Jennifer Fernandez, a 22-year-old female of Carpentersville, Illinois. She died in her Acura TSX that became engulfed in flames.

The driver of the blue Chevrolet van was Thomas Dobosz, a 32-year-old male of Rolling Meadows, Illinois. He suffered serious injuries, and was able to get out of his burning van.

His wife, Lauren Dobosz, a 31-year-old female of Rolling Meadows, Illinois was a passenger who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also killed were their five children from Rolling Meadows.

A 13-year-old girl of Rolling Meadows was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 5-year-old girl of Rolling Meadows was pronounced dead at the scene.

Illinois State Police and firefighters and paramedics from Hampshire, Marengo, Genoa-Kingston, and Pingree responded about 2:11 a.m. Sunday, July 31, 2022 to a report of a wrong-way head-on crash in the westbound lanes of I-90 at 33.5 Mile Marker just east of Anthony Road. Both vehicles were on fire following the crash.

The crash involved a silver Acura TSX and a van. A male driver of the van got out the van, but his wife and five children were trapped in the burning van. A female driver in the Acura TSX was also trapped in the burning vehicle, and died at the scene. A nurse on scene gave aid to the driver of the van.




A helicopter landing zone was set up for the airlift of the driver of the van just west of the scene in the westbound lanes of I-90. The driver of the van was airlifted to the Loyola University Medical Center Burn Unit in Maywood.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was assigned to assist with shutting down traffic near the crash scene. An Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Officer and team was assigned to the scene for an extended crash investigation. During the day Sunday just before 9:30 a.m. traffic was being diverted off I-90 WEST at Illinois Route 23. Eastbound lanes of traffic were open earlier Sunday during the day. Just before 9:30 am. the crash scene was cleared and all westbound lanes of I-90 were re-opened.

Initially Illinois State Police weren’t sure which driver was the wrong-way driver, and both vehicles were pointing southwest in the westbound lanes of I-90.
