Black Ice without Precipitation Involved Multiple Crashes on Route 53, US 12 Sunday Morning

Illinois State Police, Cook County Sheriff’s deputies and several local police departments and firefighters and paramedics from Palatine, Rolling Meadows, and Schaumburg responded between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Sunday, April 3, 2021 to several reports of crashes along Route 53 and other locations in the northwest suburbs that were related to “black ice.”




Firefighters and paramedics worked at several locations along Route 53 between Higgins Road and Dundee Road, and also on Lake Cook Road near Hicks Road in Palatine. The first personal injury crash was reported on northbound Route 53 at Higgins Road about 4:22 a.m. Another crash crash reported at 4:56 a.m. was located on the northbound Route 53 overpass over Northwest Highway, and another crash reported at 5:53 a.m. on the southbound Route 53 overpass over Northwest Highway.

A crash was reported at 6:00 a.m. on the southbound Route 53 overpass over Palatine Road.

A rollover crash at northbound Route 53 and Higgins road was reported at 6:40 a.m.

A crash was reported on southbound Route 53 at Rand Road at 7:05 a.m.

All injuries were initially reported to be minor. Roads were described as a skating rink by firefighters. All entrance ramps to Route 53 from Lake Cook Road to Algonquin Road were shut down by 6:37 a.m. until poor road conditions were resolved by about 7:30 a.m. Sunday

The Hicks Road/Lake Cook Road crash was reported about 5:21 a.m.




Police and firefighters from Mount Prospect also responded to a black ice-related crash on US-12 (Rand Road) east of Waterman Avenue in Arlington Heights. The driver of a white 2003 Chevy Trailblazer slid off of US-12 (Rand Road) into the front wall of the Fusion Hair Salon and Spa at 2430 East Rand Road, Arlington Heights (postal address). No injuries were initially reported, but firefighters were dispatched to check for structural damage. No structural damage occurred, but a large window and exterior brick material were shattered or damaged.

The Chevy Trailblazer at rest distance from the closest curb of US 12 was about 35 feet. However, the Chevy Trailblazer could have traveled as much as about 135 feet or more without control because of the black ice Sunday morning.

There was no precipitation falling when these crashes occurred. The latest precipitation was reported as “Light Snow Fog/Mist” at 4:51 p.m., Saturday, April 2, 2022 at the National Weather Station at O’Hare when the air temperature was 34°F. At Chicago Executive Airport there was fog and mist reported at 4:52 a.m. and 5:52 a.m. with an air temperature of 34°F and 32°F respectively. Freezing Fog was reported at Chicago Executive Airport at 6:52 a.m. with an air temperature of 31°F. Wind observations at Chicago Executive Airport were calm at 03:52, 04:52, 5:52, and 6:52 AM. Winds at O’Hare in the same time frame were reported calm or 3 MPH.

The official low at O’Hare International Airport was 33°F at 6:19 a.m. Sunday, April 3. 2022.
