NYPD Officer Killed in Harlem Shooting, Second Police Officer Fighting For His Life

A 22-year-old NYPD officer was shot and killed in the line of duty in Harlem on Friday night, and a second officer is fighting for his life (CBS2’s Dick Brennan reports). YouTube Tips ⓘ

NYPD police officers responded about 6:15 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2022 to a 911 call reporting a woman having a dispute with her son at an apartment near West 135th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard and Malcom X Boulevard/Lenox Avenue in Harlem, Manhattan.




When police arrived, the woman and one of her son’s were at the front of the apartment unit. The two police officers walked down a narrow hallway to the rear bedroom where the suspect was located. The suspect then shot the two police officers without warning, according to NYPD.

The suspect, Lashawn Mcneil, 47, was then shot in the arm and head by a third officer, Essig said. The suspect was shot with two rounds by the third officer, according to a police spokesperson. The suspect was listed in critical condition.

A Glock 45 handgun with an extended 40-round magazine was recovered at the scene. The gun was reported stolen in Baltimore in 2017, according to NYPD.




At a news conference at Harlem Hospital, Chief of Detectives James Essig said, “As our first officer approached the bedroom, the door swings open and numerous shots are fired, striking both officers.”

Officer Jason Rivera, 22, was killed, and a second police officer was wound officer, transported to Harlem Hospital New York City, and listed in critical condition at the hospital. The Harlem Hospital Center Emergency Room is located one block east of the shooting scene.

Rivera and the second police officer are the fourth and fifth NYPD officers shot in 2022 with only three weeks into the year. Four of the five shootings that wounded NYPD officers this year happened this past week. The first occurred on New Year’s Day.

Incumbent Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was criticized for failing to respond to rising crime, shootings and murders, was term-limited and ineligible to run for re-election.

Thursday, January 20, 2022 a police detective was shot on Staten Island as police officers served a warrant for a narcotics investigation;

Tuesday, January 18, 2022, a police officer was shot in the leg in the Bronx during a struggle with an armed suspect; and

Saturday, January 1, 2022 an off-duty officer was shot while sleeping in his car between shifts.

In Harlem, 135th Street remains closed near the crime scene.
