Bradley police responded about 9:41 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2021 to a report of dogs barking in an unattended vehicle parked in the parking lot at the Comfort Inn, 1500 North State Route 50 at the border of Bradley and Bourbonnais near Northfield Square Mall and Interstate 57. Upon arrival officers located a vehicle and a room inside the hotel where the possible owner of the vehicle was staying. Officers initiated conversation with the subjects in the room, and during the conversation one the officers was attacked by the subjects occupying the room. Both police officers were then shot during the attack, and the attackers fled the scene.




Both police officers were transported to nearby hospitals where one officer died and the other was listed in critical condition. The second officer was undergoing surgery Thursday morning. Initially identities of both police officers were withheld pending notification of family members.

Later on Thursday morning, Kankakee Coroner’s Office identified the mortally wounded police officer as Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic.

A procession in honor of Bradley Police Department Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic who was killed in the line-of-duty will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021. The procession will leave the Bryan R Mitchell MD Forensic Center at 2:00 p.m. and end at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, 295 Main Street Northwest, Bourbonnais, Illinois. Those who wish to pay their respects and honor Sergeant Rittmanic are encouraged to safely gather on sidewalks along the route (Route posted at end of article).

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Darius D Sullivan, a male/black, age 25 (born 06/21/1996). Bradley police are also looking for another person of interest who is also believed to be involved with the case. The identity of the second person being sought was not initially released. They are considered armed and dangerous.

Bradley police stated that initially the shooting appears to be an isolated incident with no further threat to the community.




The investigation was transferred to the Illinois State Police, and a tip line has been established at 815-698-2315. Anyone with information about the case or the suspects’ locations are urged to call the tip line or the Kankakee County Crime Stoppers at 815-93-CRIME (815-932-7463).

There is a $10,000.00 reward offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect below.

A procession in honor of Bradley Police Department Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic who was killed in the line-of-duty will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021. 3. Continue north on Schuyler Avenue past Court Street (Illinois Route 17) to Broadway Street in Bradley
4. West on Broadway Street to Michigan Avenue
5. Brief stop outside the Bradley Police Department
6. South on Michigan Avenue to Congress Street
7. West on Congress Street to Wabash Avenue
8. North on Wabash Avenue to Broadway Street
9. West on Broadway Street to Kennedy Drive
10. North on Kennedy Drive to Main Street
11. Main Street (Route 45/52) to Main Street North West
12. Main Street North West to Olde Oak Drive
13. Arrive at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Homes (Approximately 2:30pm)
