With world leaders visiting New York this week for the United Nations General Assembly, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates is calling on the world’s richest nations to take what he says are urgent steps needed to end “the crisis phase of this pandemic.” Judy Woodruff spoke with Gates about those steps earlier this afternoon in a wide-ranging discussion. Bill Gates did not specifically answer the question from Judy Woodruff regarding what he knew about Jeffrey Epstein when he was meeting him.

Judy Woodruff, “Is there a lesson to be learned about Epstein encounter?”

“Well, he’s dead so in general you have to be careful.”

— Bill Gates

“You had a number of meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, who — when you met him 10 years ago — he was convicted of soliciting prostitution from minors,” Judy Woodruff said. “What did you know about him when you were meeting with him, as you’ve said yourself, in the hopes of raising money?”

“You know, I had dinners with him,” Gates said. “I regret doing that. He had relationships with people he said would give to global health, which is an interest I have. Not nearly enough philanthropy goes in that direction. Those meetings were a mistake. They didn’t result in what he purported, and I cut them off. That goes back a long time ago … so there’s nothing new on that.”

Woodruff said, “It was reported you met with him a number of years, and that there were a number of meetings. What did you do when you found out about his background?” Gates answered, ” Well, you know, I said I regretted having those dinners. There’s nothing, absolutely nothing new on that.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, French Gates had met with divorce lawyers in October 2019 after her husband’s business dealings with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public, and that she had warned her husband about associating with him since 2013.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is an American private foundation founded by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates. Based in Seattle, Washington, it was launched in 2000 and is reported as of 2020 to be the second largest charitable foundation in the world

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bill Gates has been interviewed frequently by media outlets as an expert on the issue, but does not have any prior medical training. According to a CNBC article in February 2021, Gates expressed that he and Dr. Anthony Fauci frequently talk and collaborate on matters including vaccines and other medical innovations to fight the COVID-19 pandemic
