Wi Spa declined to comment on the specific incident, but said employees follow state law, which makes discrimination against transgender and other gender non-conforming customers in business establishments illegal (Video from cubanangel is edited with colorful words edited). YouTube Tips ⓘ

Los Angeles police on Saturday, July 17, 2021 declared an unlawful assembly after a protest of a local area spa’s acceptance of transgender customers with exposed male genitalia turned violent among protesters and counter protesters. Allegedly Antifa members joined the fray on the side of the counter protesters. The protest was the second protest following the initial encounter between a customer complained to a Wi Spa employee requesting that a person who claimed to be a transgender woman allegedly exposed his penis should not be permitted in the female area of the spa. Some people backed the woman at the scene, and some backed “the rights” of the transgender woman and the staff member who did not prohibit the transgender woman from entering the female area of the spa.

The first protest occurred on Saturday, July 3, 2021, following a viral video documenting the incident that was posted on social media on June 26, 2021. The dated of the incident is believed to be June 26, 2021, but was not confirmed.

Today’s protests involved a second round of protests near Wi Spa, 2700 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. Counter protesters claimed the police targeted them disproportionately compared to the protesters.

“An Unlawful Assembly was declared. Leave Wilshire and Rampart or be arrested. Immediately go Westbound Wilshire and disperse or you will be arrested. This is an Unlawful Assembly and the LAPD will arrest you if you do not leave the area immediately.”

Police ordered the area around the Wi Spa, near Wilshire Boulevard and Rampart Boulevard, to be cleared to a free speech zone nearby, and declared on a loudspeaker that anyone remaining in the prohibited area would be arrested.

The official Twitter account of the Los Angeles @LAPDHQ stated that two groups clashed at a protest, and that smoke bombs and projectiles were thrown at police officers. Police said a dispersal order was issued, and several dozen people were arrested. Police said numerous items in violation of 55.07 LAMC were found discarded including a stun gun, knives, and pepper spray.

Protesters are defined in support of women-only spaces and in support of the woman who complained at Wi Spa after the person who claimed to be a transgender woman allegedly exposed his penis in a female area of the spa. Counter protesters refer to the protesters as transphobic, and support what is known as anti-discrimination practices at Wi Spa.

Photos and videos posted on multiple Twitter accounts showed police with riot gear and non-lethal weapons clashing with protesters. Many Twitter accounts trending from the Twitter trend recommendation were anti-police and claimed police were shooting innocent people with non-lethal rounds and using batons.

Allegedly, according to witnesses, members of the far-right Proud Boys group arrived at the scene prior to the violence escalating. Proud Boys were supportive of the protesters. One tweet going viral allegedly shows a Proud Boy member deterring a counter protester with bear spray.

Brendan Gutenschwager documented what he described as Antifa tags on the Los Angeles Housing Authority and other buildings near Wi Spa.

The center of the protest was located about three blocks northwest of MacArthur Park in Los Angeles.

The images of protest violence in Los Angeles were conflated when social media posts from anti-police accounts referred to a police-involved shooting that occurred Thursday morning, July 15, 2021. A male/white armed with a replica gun was shot and killed by police, who had responded to a call of a man armed with a gun. The initial call indicated a male/white was walking with a handgun on Hollywood Boulevard. Later, police found a replica handgun at the scene. Police released images related to the police-involved shooting that killed the man.
