NBC News’ Richard Engel reports from a Singapore lab where personnel believe bats are the source of the illness, and interviews Elodie Ghedin, virologist and professor at the New York University Center for Genomics and Systems Biology.

Virologist Elodie Ghedin explains that results of studies of genetic information compares SARS-CoV-2 virus genomes to virus genomes in bats. SARS-CoV-2 is the name of the virus that cause COVID-19 disease. When genetic information is so similar between the human virus and the bat virus, the chance of the similarities happening randomly is practically impossible. Ghedin says viruses always mutate to adapt to the host, and that the current coronavirus will probably become a seasonal coronavirus illness like other seasonal coronavirus illnesses and flu illnesses. SARS from 2002-2004 or SARS-CoV, which was initially a bat virus, is very similar to the current coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The most recent pandemic was the H1N1 Pandemic in 2009 which at the time was a novel influenza A (H1N1) virus.
