Beer on the Wall Craft Beer Store to Open at Flaherty’s Former Location Spring 2019

Beer on the Wall — a craft beer retail store and tasting cafe is proposed to open spring 2019 at the former location of Flaherty Jewelers at the northwest corner of Campbell Street and Dunton Avenue in downtown Arlington Heights. The location at 2 North Dunton Avenue will be the second location for Beer on the Wall.

Flaherty Jewelers was located at 2 North Dunton Avenue for 68 years until 2015, when the jeweler moved to 22 South Evergreen Avenue. The 2 North Dunton Avenue location sat empty for three years.

Beer on the Wall, which offers a dozen rotating drafts and about 600 bottles and cans for on-site consumption or take-away, opened two years ago at 106 Main St. in Park Ridge. Their lease at 2 North Dunton Ave. in Arlington Heights until 2024 was signed in November.

The Arlington Heights store will repeat the model in Park Ridge. Beer will be served in 4-, 8- and 12-ounce draft pours, ranging in price from $2 to $12.

Tracy told the board he plans to upgrade food service offerings at both locations, giving customers “more of a restaurant feel and less of a bar feel.” Food items will range from breakfast sandwiches to baked goods, soups to paninis, and pizza by the slice to charcuterie (a variety of prepared meat products).

Village trustees approved the issuance of three liquor licenses for the business on Monday November 19, 2018. The board’s approval will allow the sale of packaged liquor, on-site beer and wine consumption, and alcohol tastings.

General Manager Ryan Tracy, who researched locations along the UP Northwest Metra train line for his second beer shop said, “There’s a fair number of Arlington Heights residents who hop off the train and come in the (Park Ridge) store, unwind for one, then hop back on the train.”

Tracy believes his store can reach success among existing food businesses in downtown Arlington Heights, because “Beer on the Wall” will fill a unique role, and “because the world doesn’t need any more sports bars, we feel we have a little bit of a niche and different vibe.”

Trustee John Scaletta said he was pleased with the layout and atmosphere of the Park Ridge location when he visited over the summer of 2018, describing the store atmosphere as “a coffee shop, but they were selling beer. It was very calm. It was very quiet there.”

Mayor Tom Hayes, who also serves as the village’s liquor control commissioner, added: “I like to hear calm associated with a place that sells alcohol.”

Hours for “Beer on the Wall” are scheduled 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
