Elgin Police Department announced late Tuesday night September 11, 2018 updates on the investigation of the homicide of Shaprie Smith at the D Hangout Bar, 550 South McClean Boulevard.

Chief Ana Lalley of the Elgin Police Department stated that over the past three days the Elgin Police Departmnet has been diligently investigating an incident that occurred on September 9, at approximately 12:22 a.m.

On Sunday September 9, 2018 about 12:22 a.m., the Elgin Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at D Hangout Bar at 550 S. McLean Blvd. in Elgin. During the course of the investigation it was determined that four subjects were shot. One of the victims, Shaprie Smith, 25-years-old, of the block of 6000 North Fairfield Ave., Chicago, was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.

During their investigation, Elgin police detectives learned an argument started in the parking lot between several subjects, including the suspect and the victim. The argument escalated into the shooting. The suspect fled in a vehicle that was later recovered in Chicago with the assistance of the Illinois State Police.

The Elgin police investigation has identified the offender as Shannon Smith, the brother of the homicide victim, Shaprie Smith. The facts of the case have been reviewed by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, who authorized the issuance of an arrest warrant for multiple charges including first degree murder for Mr. Smith.

Shannon Smith is described as an African American male, age 23, 6’0″ 180 LBS, resident of Chicago at large, wanted for First Degree Murder.

The Elgin Police Department has continuously attempted to locate Shannon Smith through contact with his family. As of Tuesday night Elgin police report they have exhausted all investigative means to locate him. The Elgin Police Department is now seeking the public’s assistance in finding Shannon Smith, 23-years-old, with a last known address also in the block of 6000 North Fairfield Avenue in Chicago.

Elgin police urge any citizens with information about the whereabouts of Shannon Smith to please call Elgin Police Department at 847-289-2700.

Police are advising any citizens that may come into contact with him, to please call 911 immediately and to not approach Shannon Smith as he may be armed. Chief Ana Lalley of the Elgin Police Department also encouraged Shannon Smith to contact a law enforcement agency to arrange a peaceful surrender.

Chief Ana Lalley states that she appreciates the patience of the Elgin community as the police department is balancing the loss the Smith family experienced with our attempts to apprehend Shannon Smith. Chief Ana Lalley also thanked local, state and federal agencies that have assisted with this investigation.

The Elgin Police Department also extended condolences to the Smith family.
