WEDNESDAY EVENING…

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CHICAGO HAS ISSUED A HEAT
ADVISORY…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 AM CDT
WEDNESDAY. AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH HAS ALSO BEEN ISSUED. THIS
EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH IS IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH
WEDNESDAY EVENING.

* TEMPERATURE…HIGH TEMPERATURES TODAY AND WEDNESDAY ARE FORECAST
TO TOP OUT NEAR OR JUST ABOVE 100 DEGREES. LOW TEMPERATURES IN
THE CITY WILL ONLY DROP INTO THE LOW TO MID 80S TONIGHT.

* HEAT INDICES…MAX HEAT INDEX VALUES TODAY ARE LIKELY TO PEAK
BETWEEN 102 AND 107. OPPRESSIVE CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH
TONIGHT WITH HEAT INDICES LIKELY TO REMAIN IN THE 90S THE
MAJORITY OF THE NIGHT IN THE HEART OF THE CITY. ON WEDNESDAY
HEAT INDICES ARE EXPECTED TO CLIMB TO BETWEEN 103 AND 108.

* OTHER…THERE IS A CHANCE THAT A WEAK FRONT COULD KICK OFF
THUNDERSTORMS AND SHIFT THE WINDS OFF THE LAKE LATE WEDNESDAY
AND POSSIBLY INTO THURSDAY. IF THIS DOES NOT OCCUR…THEN AN
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING WOULD LIKELY BE NEEDED THURSDAY AND
FRIDAY. IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO RESIDENTS CAN CALL 3 1 1 TO
REQUEST NON-EMERGENCY HEAT ASSISTANCE SUCH AS REQUESTING WELL
BEING CHECKS AND LOCATING THE NEAREST COOLING CENTER.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS…IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN
POSSIBLE…RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR
EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT
STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN
POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK…THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS
IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY
HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE
IS AN EMERGENCY…CALL 9 1 1.

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT WEATHER IS EXPECTED.
HIGH TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A
SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF
FLUIDS…STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM…STAY OUT OF THE SUN…
AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.

CHILDREN AND PETS SHOULD NEVER BE LEFT UNATTENDED IN VEHICLES
UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE DURING HOT
WEATHER WHEN THE CAR INTERIOR CAN REACH LETHAL TEMPERATURES IN A
MATTER OF MINUTES!

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH MEANS THAT A PROLONGED PERIOD OF HOT
TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND
HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN
WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS…STAY
