Intersection of Elmhurst Road and Hintz Road in Wheeling — site of a two-vehicle accident that killed Kyle Kelly of Arlington Heights just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Wheeling police and firefighter/paramedics responded to a fatal crash at Elmhurst and Hintz Road just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday. Kyle Kelly of the 900 block of North Beverly Lane in Arlington Heights, was pronounced dead at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview about 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

Kelly’s 2006 Mercury Zephyr was apparently westbound on Hintz Road and may have been driven through a red light at high speed when it struck the rear driver’s side of a 2005 Lincoln Navigator heading south on Elmhurst Road near Wheeling High School. The Navigator rolled over and landed upright with heavy damage. A male driver was able to get out of the Navigator on his own.

An accident investigation, which closed Hintz Road in both directions for six hours, so far has placed the blame for the accident on the driver of the Mercury Zephyr — Kyle Kelly.

Family and friends have set up a roadside memorial at the southeast corner of Hintz Road and Elmhurst Road in honor of Kyle Kelly.

In February 2008, Kyle Kelly pleaded guilty to charges of arson and delivery of cocaine after prosecutors alleged that Kyle Kelly, then 19 and residing in the 900 block of North Beverly Lane, solicited Alan Villagrana, then 20 and residing in 1600 block of North Windsor Drive, to set fire to Kelly’s father’s home with the intent that Kelly’s father would collect an insurance payout. Villagrana was accused of entering Kelly’s father’s home on the 1800 block of North Forrest Avenue in Arlington Heights on October 1, 2007 and dousing it with gasoline supplied by Kyle Kelly. Villagrana also spray-painted gang symbols on the home to mislead investigators. The home, which was vacant, sustained about $150,000 in damages from a fire with multiple sources of origin.

Kelly and Villagrana were arrested in the Arlington Heights/Prospect Heights area, after police, acting on submitted information, caught them in an operation selling cocaine to an undercover officer. Police revealed that Kelly and Villagrana arrived together Monday, November 19, 2007 at a Rand Road parking lot, where an undercover officer paid Kelly $260 for about 5.1 grams of cocaine. Police charged Kelly and Villagrana with delivery of a controlled substance. The suspects gave written statements admitting their involvement in the arson.

So what about his past! A young man DIED do you not see this! God people now a days whoever wrote this article you sicken me!

  5. If Kylie were my grandchild and Kyle were my son that was known to be driving like this, and he lived, he would get a severe lesson on life from me when he got home. Karma? Vivian? It looks like Karma already took care of Kyle Kelly.

  6. Fathered a kid to an underage girl at the time. Sold drugs, committed arson, and ran a red light.

All reasons for concerns. Still happened in the past.

Not a very cool article to write. Terrible reporting. Why don’t you bring up the fact he stole some crayons back in elementary school

  7. this article is the biggest piece of cull i have ever read. this reporter should be fired. how dare you put his past convictions that he did his time for. i have known kyle for years, he had definitely changed since he got out of boot camp. and as for you papa, i can tell you that this article is wrong. how dare you say karma got him back? that is the most horrrible thing to say. hopefully karma will get back to you with that comment. he was 19 and his girlfriend was 17, and she had kylie at 18 if you want to know the FACTS and not some bull that this illiterate, uneducated and a-hole of a “reporter” puts down. did they write how he was fighting hard for the custody battle, or the fact he had a job and paid for an apartment by himself, which most adults cant even do. he was the most generous person i have ever met. does a drugged out, horrible person drive an hour at 3am to help his friend because their car got a flat tire and then when he finds out the bolt is stuck he paid for a tow truck and didnt even ask to see the money back. yeah, that sounds like a bad kid to me! this writer should get fired, and how dare any of you, esp if you didnt know him say anything bad about him. god rest his soul. we will ALWAYS love you very much.

  8. Courtney,
You say ‘How dare you?’ How is it you grew up without an education about the First Amendment, including Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press. The reporter wrote facts and has every right in the United States to express those facts. What facts are wrong about this article? You don’t even logically explain or defend which statements are false. You and many of Kyle’s so-called friends are mixed up misfits that must believe that since Kyle did his time, his former charges never existed. Kyle was an arsonist and he was a drug dealer. Those are true statements. Just because he did ‘his time’ doesn’t mean those statements aren’t true. As an arsonist he showed a total disregard for the lives of firefighters while even his own brother was or was about to become a firefighter. As a drug dealer he showed total disregard for the consequences of addiction that his product cocaine might have on his customers. He was caught by undercover cops selling drugs. He confessed to both crimes. What is shameful is that your generation has been brought up so selfish and full of yourselves that you think that you can tell other people what to say, even if it means hiding or suppressing the truth — just to agree with the ‘reality’ that you have imagined in your head. In your warped reality you have even proposed that most adults can’t find a job and pay for an apartment? But Kyle your hero was doing that. There are people all over this world that have jobs, pay for apartments and give birth to beautiful children. There is nothing heroic about any of that — it’s life. Do I read into this some nonsense that you believe as a youth, you know better than adults. Or Kyle was somehow more heroic than the average adult out there? Get real … I mean really real. But the bigger disaster of your education and upbringing is that you don’t understand the consequences of your actions. Call it Karma, call it arrogance, or call it stupidity: there IS a connection between Kyle’s past behavior and his latest accident that caused his death, and that is why it is important for people with brains to be allowed to learn all of the facts. But from what I have read from your friends here and in the Daily Herald comments, instead of sucking up and humbly accepting the facts, you and others want to direct your rage on people that tell the truth, or even the paramedics that some are claiming didn’t take him to the right hospital. Some of Kyle’s friends will do anything to avoid the pain of their friend’s failure. That’s right! Just blame others instead of accepting the pain of your own failures or your friend’s failure. Yes, its a failure. Kyle was convicted for disregarding laws. He showed continuous lack of concern for others — at least toward people that weren’t his friends or were complete strangers to him. He continued to disregard rules and laws and he lost out to the laws of physics after he smashed his car into another vehicle. He could have killed the other driver. He could have killed his own daughter if she were in the car. But the reporter didn’t condemn Kyle. The reporter merely said some true statements, resulting in you and your spoiled, selfish friends ranting mistakenly about how the reporter is ‘illiterate’ and ‘uneducated.’ One of Kyle’s friends or relatives even goes so far as to threaten the reporter and the ‘whole office’, which could include innocent people that have nothing to do with this story. The group of you appear to be selfish, raging goons. Did Kyle do nice things for his friends? Maybe. Why don’t you all focus on mentioning the good things Kyle has done then. This would be a good place to do it.

  9. how dare you do this to kyle’s family. i dont even know him or anyone involved but i have to say this is the most uncaring, hurtful thing you could ever do~! i am so ashamed that you have stooped to the level of putting blame, past experiences and hurt to his family. SHAME ON YOU~! would love to have you walk a day in their shoes and see how this feels. i can’t believe this trash~!!!!

  10. Your article is completely without compassion. And whoever wrote it should immediately apologize to this young man’s family and friends. Whatever this young man did in the past should stay in the past. This article is nothing more than sensationalism. My heart goes out to his family and friends. And to the person who wrote this article…..no one is “squeaky clean.” If you were to die today (God forbid) what would be dredged up about your life? Reporting is supposed to be unbiased. You certainly overstepped the bounds of professional ethics on this one.

  11. This article is just very poorly written. The reporter jumps from topic of importance (Kyle’s death) to something completely irrelevant..(Kyle’s mistakes). I believe that this writer should be fired solely based on the fact that the article was supposed to be about Kyle’s death but instead turned into Kyle’s mistakes. Furthermore, it is no ones right to play God… Please do not hint or infer things about why someone died. God is the only one that knows when it is someone’s time. My condolensces to the family, may you live abundant lives.

  12. This article still makes me so angry whenever i read it. how could you ever bring up someones past mistakes like that. This person should be fired.

  13. col — I can’t believe someone is so incredibly naive to think that a journalist should be fired for reporting the truth about a convicted drug dealer and arsonist. I would guess that you are a typical ignorant drama queen that is part of the reason for the decay of our society. You should look inside yourself and redirect your anger to where the real evil is. Somehow, somewhere try to find inside your soul the part that doesn’t get angry with the truth.
