SURENO 13 GANG ACTIVITY LEADS TO THREE ARRESTS
Cook County Sheriff’s police were conducting surveillance Wednesday night — on alert for a gang fight that might be initiated by suspects in a neighborhood in unincorporated Arlington Heights near Route 53 and Lake Cook Road. The police saw three men leave an apartment and enter an SUV — two of the men had shotguns. After initiating a traffic stop at Lake Cook and Wilke Road, a vehicle pursuit began. Cook County Sheriff’s deputies on northbound Hicks Road near Lake Cook Road saw three suspects bail out of the SUV. A foot pursuit continued in an area of woods just after 1100 p.m. Wednesday. One of the suspects, who bailed out of their vehicle, was carrying a shotgun and wearing all red. A second suspect was wearing a black hoodie and jeans. Palatine Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s deputies immediately assisted with the pursuit. Police lost sight of the suspects and called in a bloodhound for tracking, and a police helicopter for aerial searching.

Buffalo Grove police assisted with a wide perimeter border that was located near Arlington Heights Road and Checker. Police announced three suspects in custody at about 1:15 a.m. Thursday.

Hiram Chavez, 36, 2200 block of West Nichols (left); Victor Lujano, 27, 300 block Salem Road (center); Jorge Gonzalez-Macedonio, 31, address unknown (right).

The driver was caught immediately. A bloodhound tracked a second suspect to the location where he was hiding under a log. The third suspect was stuck in mud in a marshy area, and spotted by a Cook County Sheriff/Chicago Police Department helicopter. The bloodhound, Melanie, was able to track the precise location with the assistance of thermal imaging from the helicopter, which had to be grounded because of deteriorating weather conditions. The suspect was under 6 to 12 inches of water, motionless, with only his face above water. As police approached the offender on foot about one-quarter mile into marsh and woods, he told police that he was unable to move his body because he was stuck in the marsh.

Hiram Chavez, 36, of the 2200 block of West Nichols in Arlington Heights, was the driver of the SUV. He is charged with fleeing and eluding, a misdemeanor.

Victor Lujano, 27, of the 300 block of Salem Road in Arlington Heights, was captured after getting stuck in the marsh. He was seen by police with a shotgun and is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Sheriff’s police have had several encounters with Lujano and he has been warned numerous times to stay out of the private apartment complexes in the area. At the Rolling Meadows courthouse on Friday, bond was set for him at $60,000.

Jorge Gonzalez-Macedonio, 31, address unknown, was captured by Melanie while hiding under a log. He is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He told police he has previously been arrested on felony charges and was previously turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and deported to Mexico. At the Rolling Meadows courthouse on Friday, bond was set for him at $50,000.

All three are admitted members of the Sureno 13 street gang. Lujano and Gonzalez-Macedonio remain in the Cook County Jail. All three are set to appear in Rolling Meadows court in April.

The Illinois State Police, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, as well as the Palatine, Northbrook, Arlington Heights and Kildeer police departments, and the Long Grove Fire Department assisted with investigation and operations.
