THREE FIREFIGHTERS INJURED FIGHTING HOUSE FIRE

Cary firefighters responded about 8:27 p.m. Friday July 7, 2017 to a report of a basement fire at 210 Hickory Nut Grove Lane. While fighting the fire, one firefighter fell through a hole and into a burning basement, another firefighter suffered an electrical shock, and a third firefighter injured his leg as firefighter fought a house fire in unincorporated McHenry County.

An off-duty firefighter who lives nearby arrived at the scene of the fire about one minute before the first Cary Fire Department units arrived at about 8:31 p.m. The off-duty firefighter reported smoke showing from the left side of the house, with reports from neighbors that everyone was out of the house. The house backs up to the Fox River and has a long driveway on the property.

Engine 242’s crew on arrival reported there were no flames showing, but light hazy smoke was showing. After walking around the house to assess the scene, firefighters reported smoke-stained windows in the back of the house with a lot of heat in the house.

Firefighters began an interior attack for a basement fire in the 1-story single family residence.

One of the injured firefighters was looking for the door to the basement, where the fire was burning, when the floor gave way. The firefighter was in the fire and trapped for a few minutes. The firefighter’s partner immediately radioed a “Mayday” call and firefighters were able to keep him wet with spray from a hose line until they were able to rescue him by pulling him up back through the hole. The injured firefighter was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was listed in fair condition.

The other two firefighters who were injured were also transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, where they were admitted in good condition, and later released.

Firefighters used tanker or tender trucks to shuttle water to a portable tank set up at the fire scene. At least three trucks and 10,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the fire. The fire was extinguished within 90 minutes.

A MABAS Box Alarm was activated at 8:58 p.m. for assistance from firefighters from neighboring communities.
