Mount Prospect police responded about 3:00 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017 after an attempted sexual assault of a female resident in a Mount Prospect apartment. Initially, about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, a 25-year-old woman returned home from work and discovered an open window. After closing and locking the window and bolting the front door, she changed clothes, ate and went to bed.

About 3 a.m., she awoke with a man on top of her. Allegedly, the man was also striking her head. The offender squeezed her throat and covered her face with a pillow, making it difficult for her to breath, according to police. The woman was able to defend herself, and the offender fled. Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney David Mennie explained details of the attack at the suspect’s bond hearing

The woman locked her bedroom door and called police, and when police arrived, they found a suspect, Luis Del Peral-Velazco, 28, according to Mennie. Mount Prospect police encountered Del Peral-Valazco walking outside the apartment wearing bloodstained clothing. He also had fresh scratches on his face, neck and chest and fresh blood on his hands, according to Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney David Mennie. Del Peral-Valazco was “unable to explain to police on the scene how he sustained the injuries, or where he was coming from,” according to Mennie. Del Peral-Valazco was subsequently charged with aggravated attempted sexual assault, home invasion and aggravated battery.

Mennie said, during Del Peral-Velazco’s bond hearing, that Del Peral-Velazco used a piece of clothing to tie the woman’s hands and attempted to sexually assault her. The victim broke free, punched and scratched Del Peral-Velazco, and screamed as he fled the room, Mennie said.

Del Peral-Velazco was ordered held on $1 million bail Tuesday, and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, March 3, 2017.
