Zion Police Suspect Police Impersonator Probably Seeking Homes to Burglarize

Zion police are warning Zion residents that a police impersonator who went up to a resident’s front door this week, saying he was a police officer investigating residential burglaries, was probably a man looking for homes to burglarize.

Police received a call around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday November 15, 2016 from a resident reporting that on Monday a man approached their house in the 2600 block of Horeb Avenue and identified himself as a police officer. The man said he was there to inform residents of recent burglaries in the neighborhood, according to Zion police.

The police impersonator was described as a black male with a light complexion, black hair and a medium build, wearing a black t-shirt and black cargo-type pants with a police-style duty belt. The man left the area in a dark-colored vehicle with Illinois license plates.

Police believe the man was probably casing the house for a burglary, and preparing to select houses where there was no answer at the door.

Zion police reported that none of their police officers or detectives were conducting any investigations or other police activity in the area Monday.

There were no other reports of a police impersonator.

Police remind residents that they should not hesitate to ask a plainclothes police officer to display his or her badge.
