New Probe Opens Hillary Clinton’s E-Mail Server Investigation with 12 or Less Days to Presidential Election

An announcement today signals an apparent restart to the FBI’s probe of Hillary Clinton’s mail server. , FBI Director James Comey informed congressional leaders Friday that FBI will investigate whether additional classified material is contained in emails sent using Hillary Clinton’s private email server while she was secretary of state.

“I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.”

— James Comey

In a letter to congressional leaders today, Comey said that the FBI had — in connection with an “unrelated case” — recently “learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the Clinton investigation.”

Comey indicated that he had been briefed on the new material Thursday, October 27, 2016. The FBI had previously closed its investigation in July 2016 with no charges, and Comey saying there was no intent that would make the case criminal. However, Comey revealed that there had been classified content exchanged on the server and that Clinton had been “extremely careless.” Comey was criticized, especially by conservatives, that crimes were committed, and that there was a double standard on how Clinton’s case was managed, and how the average citizen’s case would be administered under similar circumstances.

The latest probe is released less than 13 days before the presidential election. The development could alter the success of Hillary Clinton’s campaign in its final days, but probably would have little impact on staunch Democrats.
