Iran Executes Nuclear Scientist Shahram Amiri Accused of Spying for the U.S.

Nuclear scientist Shahram Amiri was executed by the Iranian government for allegedly sharing confidential information with the United States. James Carafano from the Heritage Foundation joins CBSN to discuss the controversial case.

In the spring of 2009, Shahram Amiri disappeared while apparently on a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. In July 2010, Shahram Amiri reappeared in Washington D.C. at the Iran interests section of the Embassy of Pakistan. He was seeking help for immediate return to Tehran. The Iran interest section is under the protection of Pakistan’s embassy in Washington D.C., but is housed in a different building and managed by Iranians.

ABC News reported in March 2010 that Amiri had defected and was helping the CIA with information about the Iranian nuclear program.

Amiri’s sudden appearance was reported to be a major embarrassment for the American spy agencies. Amiri was publically critical of the US government, and claimed the United States government would be responsible if he did not return home alive to Islamic Republic of Iran.
