North Korea sentenced U.S. citizen Kim Dong Chul to 10 years of hard labor. CNN’s Will Ripley reports.

Kim Dong Chul, 62, is a former resident of Fairfax, Virginia, and a naturalized citizen of the United States, born in South Korea. He recently had been living in China with his wife. Kim Dong Chul owns a business in a special economic zone of the DPRK.

North Korean news agency KCNA reported that Kim Dong Chul was first approached by South Korean intelligence officers in 2011 to engage in paid espionage.

Critics of the sentencing say his confession was a forced confession.
