A husband and wife, wearing armoured clothing and Go-Pro cameras started “shooting everywhere” according to witnesses at the Inland Regional Center. Police confirmed that 14 people were killed and 17 people were injured. Police did not specify the status of the injured regarding critical, serious or good condition descriptors.

Police were working on a tip and made contact with the suspect’s vehicle in the Redlands area of San Bernardino. A pursuit from the Redlands area came back to the San Bernardino city limits and the police pursuit was terminated with gunfire with what Police Chief called an officer-involved shooting on San Bernardino Avenue between Mountain View and Richardson Street. Witnesses at the scene reported a hail of gunfire — one said the exchange of gunfire sounded like “Vietnam.”

Twenty or twenty-one officers were involved in a gun battle with the suspects. The two suspects that were in the SUV were both killed. The first suspect was identified as a male, Syed Rizwan Farook, age 28, and “US born”. The second suspect was identified as a female, Tashfeen Malik, age 27. Other sources have described the male and female as husband and wife, who were recently given a baby shower by the same group that included the shooting victims after Farook had returned from paternity leave and after the birth of the couple’s child.

The mass shooting at Inland Regional Center was described to have occurred at a Christmas party type event involving San Mateo County employees. Farook was a county employee working as an Environmental Specialist for the past five years. Farook left the party under circumstances that were described as angry.

Police sought suspects in the City of Redlands when the suspects were seen leaving the area. dressed in “kind of assault” style clothing and armed with assault rifles, handguns, and some “sensitive stuff” that was approached with caution in case there were explosives at the scene.
